Welcome to the Twickenham Society's Website

The Society exists to make Twickenham a better place in which to live. It seeks to stimulate public interest in, and care for, the beauty, history and character of Twickenham and its surroundings.

UPDATE: 5 October 2008

Following David King's resignation, Perminder Tamana has taken over the role of Social Secretary for the Society, email perminder.tamana@twicksoc.org.uk, and a new programme of events is being developed.

The Environment Trust for Richmond upon Thames has produced a new report on the projected River Centre for Twickenham, with an introduction by the Centre's patron, Sir David Attenborough. Copies can be downloaded from the River Centre website, www.rivercentre.org.uk

And the Council's consultation on the renovation of Twickenham Riverside Embankment, from Water Lane to Church Lane, will run from 6 to 24 October. (This does NOT include the section in front of the swimming pool site). Funds for this work have already been allocated, from the Council and London's Arcadia. Plans are on view at the Civic Centre, 44 York Street, Twickenham. Details can be found here.

The Embankment consultation includes the proposed Eel Pie Legends memorial to groups who played at the Eel Pie Island Hotel, including The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, and The Who, plus the work of Arthur Chisnell in helping young people in Twickenham.

PAST EVENTS: Saturday 21 June, 2008 Fun Day on Twickenham Green

The Twickenham Society stall at the fun day
We had a very successful stall at the Fun Day, which drew large crowds despite the occasionally ominous-looking weather.

Donations of books, CDs, VHS tapes and DVDs sold very well, and the team, Jane Smith, Doug Orchard, Jack Betteridge and Yvonne Hewett, were constantly busy and occasionally rushed off our feet. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Gifford House

Residents' Planning Brief for Gifford House (.pdf, 12 pages, 128KB) prepared for and agreed on behalf of Gifford House Action Group, Grange Avenue Residents’ Association, Strawberry Hill Residents’ Association, Friends of Twickenham Green and the Twickenham Society.

There's a report of the public meeting of 28 November, 2007 on Twickenham Online.
